Nervous System Flashcards
(11 cards)
What is the human nervous system?
Body wide system of nerve cells that collect info from the world, processes info then takes action (through directing organs and muscles via the transmission of chemical messages)
What is the nervous system split into?
Th CNS (central nervous system)
The PNS (peripheral nervous system)
What is the CNS and what role does it play?
Provides complex processing
Contains the brain (all conscious and unconscious processing)
Contains spinal chord (recueces and transmits info)
What is the PNS?
Body wide network of messenger neuronss
Sensory neurons to CNS and motor away from CNS
What is the PNS divided into?
The somatic and autonomic nervous system
What is the somatic nervous system?
Controls muscles for movement
Voluntary system
What is the autonomic nervous system?
Controls actions of organs and glands
Involuntary system
What is the autonomic nervous system divided into?
The parasympathetic and sympathetic nervous system.
What is the role of the sympathetic branch of the ANS?
Activated in stress response (fight or flight)
Increases bodily activities
Heart rate, sweat, breathing rate increase
Pupils dialate
Inhibits digestion
What is the parasympathetic branch of the ANS?
Rest and digest
Decreases bodily functions
Heart, sweat, breathing rate decrease
Constricts pupils
Stimulates digestion
What is homeostasis?
Regulation of the internal environment.
In normal condition= balance between sympathetic and parasympathetic systems
This is maintaining homeostasis
