Nervous system Flashcards
(14 cards)
2 types of nervous systems
- Central Nervous system:
made up of the brain and spinal cord - Peripheral Nervous System:
the part of the nervous system that connects the brain and spinal cord (central nervous system, CNS) to the rest of the body.
What are neurons?
Neurons are specialised cells that make up the nervous system.
3 types of Neurons
Sensory
Motor
Iner
Sensory Neuron
Sends signals to the brain from the body’s receptors.
Motor Neurons
Sends impulses from the brain to muscles or glands.
Inter Neurons
Connects other neuron to each.
Parts of a neuron
- Receptors
- Cell Body
- Dendrites
- Axon
- Myelin Sheath
- Synaptic Knobs
- Neuron Transmitters
Receptors
Detects external stimuli of the body.
Cell Body
Contains nucleus & most of the cytoplasm
Dendrites
brings impulses into the neuron to the cell body.
Axon
carries impulses away from the cell body
Myelin Sheath
Fatty tissue that covers the axon of the sensory and motor neurons.
Synaptic Knobs
contains chemicals that allow transmission of the impulse to the next neuron
Neurotransmitters
chemicals released from the synaptic knob from one neuron to stimulate the next.
