Nervous System Flashcards
(7 cards)
What is spatial summation
Multiple different presynaptic neurones release enough neurotransmitters at once to exceed the threshold potential and trigger an action potential.
What is temporal summation
A single presynaptic neurone releases neurotransmitters many times over a very short period to exceed the threshold potential and trigger an action potential.
What is spatial summation
Multiple neuron synapses stimulate the postsynaptic neuron
What is temporal summation
One neuron sends a high frequency of action potentials at once
Parcinian corpsical
Has stretch mediated sodium ion channels, sensory neurone surrounded by tissue layers that detects mechanical pressure
Cone cells
-3 types of pigment so can detect blue red and green light, high visual acuity, and sensitive to high light intensities, generates separate action potentials in separate sensory neurones
Rod cells
1 type of pigment, so interpret all colours as shades of black and white, low visual acuity so only pick out rough shapes, but sensitive to low light sensitivities (allow eyes to see in dark), many rods connect to one sensory neurone so a single action potential is sent to the brain
