Nervous System Flashcards
What are the main functions?
Sensory input - to monitor change occurring inside and outside the body
Integration - to process and interpret sensory input and decide if action is needed
Motor output - a response to integrated stimuli
Two major divisions of the nervous system
The central nervous system (brain and spinal cord)
Peripheral nervous system (cranial and spinal nerves)
What is the synapse
The junction where nerve impulses are transmitted from one neurone to another.
Junction between two neurones or between a neurone and a muscle/gland
•pre synaptic membrane
•post synaptic membrane
•synaptic cleft
How does the synapse carry the signal
- Electrical current travels down axon
- Viscose with chemicals move towards the membrane
- Chemicals are released and diffuse toward the next cells plasma membrane
- The chemical open up the transport proteins and slow the signal to pass to next cell
What is the protective membrane covering the brain
The meninges - three membranes with cerebrospinal fluid.
The arachnoid mater
The subarachnoid mater
The pia mater
