Nervous System - Brain & Meninges Flashcards
(10 cards)
Meninges layers (outer to inner)
dura, arachnoid, pia
dura mater
tough, fibrous outer layer
has inner & outer layers with venous sinuses between them
arachnoid mater
between dura and pia
underneath subarachnoid space which is CSF filled
pia mater
thin and delicate layer
attaches directly to the brain tissue
ventricular system
lateral ventricles (1st & 2nd) - 3rd ventricle - cerebral aqueduct - 4th ventricle - subarachnoid space
what is csf produced by
chloroid plexus
cerebrum parts & functions
frontal: motor control, problem solving
parietal: sensory processing
temporal: hearing, memory
occipital: vision
cerebellum parts & functions
brainstem (midbrain, pons, medulla oblongata): breathing and heart rate
primary motor cortex & corticospinal tract (efferent)
primary motor cortex in frontal lobe
corticospinal tract:
- upper motor neuron starts in cortex
- crosses in medulla
- synapses on lower motor neuron
- lower motor neuron exits through ventral root
primary somatosensory cortex & dorsal column pathway (afferent)
primary somatosensory cortex in parietal lobe
dorsal column pathway:
- sensory neuron enters through dorsal root
- ascends spinal cord
- synapses & crosses in medulla
- synapses again in thalamus
- projects to somatosensory cortex
