Nervous System - Motor Control & Somatic Sensation Flashcards
(12 cards)
stretch reflex function
prevents muscle overstretch
withdrawal reflex function
pulls body part away from painful stimulus
stretch reflex process
when muscle spindle senses stretch:
sensory neuron sends signal to spinal cord then synapses directly with motor neuron, motor neuron causes muscle contraction. (monosynaptic)
withdrawal reflex process
pain receptor (skin):
sensory neuron sends signal to spinal cord that connect with interneurons, interneurons activate motor neurons that pull limb away.
muscle tension
golgi tendon organs
when tension is too high they inhibit contraction
voluntary movement
motor cortex
signals go down corticospinal tract to spinal cord motor neurons and muscles contract
sensory receptors
detect stimuli
modality
type of stimulus
location
which receptor is activated
intensity
frequency of APs
duration
how long stimulus lasts
basal ganglia
initiates patterns of movement
