NERVOUS SYSTEM (LESSON 4) Flashcards
collection of nerves and specialized cells known as neurons
NERVOUS SYSTEM
consists of the brain and spinal cord
Central Nervous System
central processing unit of the nervous system
BRAIN
receiving and processing sensory information
FOREBRAIN
relay station for auditory and visual information.
MIDBRAIN
functions that are fundamental to survival
HINDBRAIN
a long, thin, tubular structure made up of nervous tissue
SPINAL CHORD
lie outside of the central nervous system (CNS)
Peripheral Nervous System (PNS)
voluntary control of body movements via skeletal muscles.
Somatic Nervous System (MANUAL)
acts largely unconsciously and regulates bodily functions
Autonomic Nervous System(AUTOMATIC)
activates the fight or flight response
Sympathetic Mechanism
automatic physiological reaction to an event that is perceived as stressful or frightening.
Flight of Fight Response
restores the body to a state of calm.
Parasympathetic Mechanism
designed to transmit information to other nerve cells, muscle, or gland cells.
NEURON
get information about what’s going on inside and outside of the body
Sensory Neuron
They receive information from other neurons and transmit information to other neurons
Inter Neuron
get information from other neurons and convey commands to your muscles, organs, and glands.
Motor Neuron
