Network Flashcards
(23 cards)
What is lan
Local area network Small geographical area Single site Can be wired or wireless All hardware owned by person using it
What is wan
Wide area network
Connects lans that are in different geographical areas
They have to hire infrastructure
Nic
Network interface card
Internal piece of hardware that allows a device to connect to a network
Switches
Connect devices on a lan
Routers
Transmit data between networks
Ethernet cables
Used to connect devices to a lan most common are cat 5c and cat6
Coaxial cables
Single copper wire
Fibre optic
Transmit data as light
High performance
Expensive
Wireless
Use radio waves
WiFi
Standard for wireless network
Uses 2 frequency waves 2.4 and 5 GHz
2.4- greater range
5- shorter range but faster
Client to server
Advantages and disadvantages
Advantages-easier to back up, easier to keep track of files, servers are reliable and always on
Disadvantages-expensive to set up and needs it specialists
Peer to peer
Advantages and disadvantages
Advantages-easier to maintain,if one device fails the whole network isn’t lost
Disadvantages-devices need to install and update software individually, macines are prone to slow down
What is the cloud
When a business uses its servers to store files of another organisation
Advantages and disadvantages of the cloud
Advantages: users can access files from any connected device, easy to increase how much storage is available
Disadvantages: needs connection to the internet to access, depends on host for security and back ups
What’s a virtual network
A network totally software based
What’s a vpn
Virtual private network
Type of virtual network that can be used to send data securely over a large network
Network topology
The layout of a network
Star topology
Pros: rest of network is unaffected if a device fails, simple to add more devices, data goes straight to the centre
Cons:
Expensive cos every device needs a cable, if there is a problem with the server or central switch the whole network is affected
Mesh topology
Pros: no single point where the network can fail
Cons:very expensive because needs so many wires
What’s a network protocols
A protocol is a set of rules for how devices communicate and how data is transmitted across a network
Every device needs a unique identifier so it can be found in a network
ip address
When sending data between tcp/up address
Static up
Permanent
Dynamic ip
Assigned when a device logs into a network
