Symptom provocation study

A

Expose them to triggers of compulsive behaviour/obsessions inside a scanner. Eg picture of messy suitcase, asymmetrical etc.

Blocked design with neutral and trigger pictures, allow bold signals to be registered. Checking the baseline between triggers/neutrals shows brain activation in compulsive brain

Most consistent finding fMRI studies

A

Hyperactivity in the orbitofrontal cortex (OFC) and the ventromedial prefrontal cortex (vmPFC) and caudate nucleus (CN).

Meaning: goal-directed control regions seem to be more active.

The circuit that is active in OCD is usually less active in SUD. Opposite results.
