Neuron Flashcards
(16 cards)
Neuron
Highly specialized to transmit message from one part of the body to another
Cell body
Contains the nucleus, metabolic center of the cell
Dendrites
Convey incoming message toward the cell body
Axons
Transmit nerve impulses away from the cell body
Axonal terminal
Branches at the end of an axon
Neurotranmitters
Chemicals that are contained within axonal terminals and are when the nerve impulses reaches the axonal terminal
Synapse
The region of communication bw neurons
Myeline sheath
Covers the nerve fiber, protects and insulates. Increases transmission rate of nerve impulses
Schwann cells
Specialized supporting cells that wrap themselves around axon outside the cns, forms the myeline sheatg
Nodes of ranvier
Gaps bw schwan cell
Sensory or afferent neurons
Carry impulses from sensory receptors to CNS
Motor or efferent neuron
From Cns to the viscera and muscles and gland
Imterneurons
Connect motor and sensory neurons
Multipolar
Motor neuron, numerous branching densities, One axon, most common
Bipolar
Interneuron, axon and dendrite, rate in adults, found in special organ
Unipolar
Sensory neuron, very short. Single process
