Neurons Flashcards
(12 cards)
The nerve cell/ Basic building of the nervous system.
Neuron
Carries incoming information from sensory receptors to brain/spinal cord.
-Example: Perceiving something as hot
Sensory Neuron
Carries outgoing information from the brain/spinal cord to the muscles/glands
Motor neuron
-Located with the brain and the spinal cord.
-Communicates internally between sensory inputs and motor outputs.
Interneurons
-The body’s speedy chemical network
-Consists of all the nerve cells of the peripheral and central nervous system.
Nervous System
-The brain and spinal chord; interneurons communicate in the spinal cord (Reflexes)
-The CNS is the decision maker…it is responsible for coordinating incoming sensory messages and outgoing motor messages
Central Nervous System (CNS)
-The sensory and motor neurons that connect the central nervous system with the rest of the body.
-The PNS connects the body to the CNS by gathering information from the senses and transmitting messages to the CNS.
-Breaks down into to divisions: the ______, and the _______
-Peripheral Nervous System (PNS)
-The Autonomic nervous system and the stomatic nervous system
-Controls the glands and the muscles of the internal organs such as the heart.
-Automatic
-Two types, _________ and _________
-Autonomic Nervous System (ANS)
-Parasympathetic (calming) and Sympathetic (arousing)
-Controls the body’s skeletal muscles
-Voluntary
Stomatic Nervous System (SNS)
-Arouses the body, mobilizing its energy.
-Accelerates the heartbeat, raises blood pressure, slows digestion, raises blood sugar, and cools the body.
-Fight, Flight, or Freeze
-Metaphor: The gas pedal of a car
The Sympathetic Nervous System
-Calms the body, conserving its energy
-Decelerates heartbeat, lowers blood pressure, stimulates digestion, processes waste, and calms the body.
-“Rest or digest”
-Metaphor: The brake pedal of a car
Parasympathetic Nervous System
Bundled axons that form neural “cables” connecting the nervous system with muscles, glands, and sense organs.
