Older Brain Structures Flashcards
(12 cards)
-Oldest part of central core of the brain
-Begging where the spinal cord swells as it enters the skull
Brainstem
What part of the brain function is automatic survival functions such as breathing and heartbeat?
Brainstem
-Base of the brain stem
-Function: Controls heartbeat and breathing
Medulla
-Located above the medulla
-Function: Coordinates movement and controls sleep
Pons
-A nerve network in the brainstem
-Function: Controls arousal
Reticular formation
-Brains sensory switchboard
-Located on top of the brainstem
-Function: Directs messages to the sensory receiving areas in the cortex.
-Also functions: Transmits replies to the cerebellum and medulla
Thalamus
-“Little Brain”
-Located at the rear of the brainstem
-Functions: Processing sensory input, coordinating movement output and balance, nonverbal learning and memory.
Cerebellum
-Donut shaped neural system
-Located below the celebral hemispheres
-Includes the hippocampus, amygdala, hypothalamus.
-Function: Linked to emotions/drives
Limbic System
Function: Processes memory
Hippocampus
-Two lima bean-sized neural clusters
-Function: Linked to emotion and fear
Amygdala
-Located below the thalamus.
-Function: Maintenance activities such as eating, drinking and body temperature.
-Governs endocrine system
-Linked to emotion and reward
Hypothalamus
