Neurovascular Flashcards
(18 cards)
What is a neurovascular condition?
Neurological conditions
are disorders of the brain, spinal
cord or nerves
They can have a range of causes
including genetic factors, traumatic
injury and infection
Transient ischaemic attack (TIA)
A temporary interruption in blood flow
to an area of the brain that does not
last long enough to cause permanent damage to the brain (less than 24 hours). Always caused by temporary ischemia, not bleeding.
-Aspirin 300mg if tolerated
-Refer to specialist within 24 hours for CT scan/ ECG/ carotid
doppler
-Lifestyle advise and management of risk factors
-Advice re stroke recognition
Stroke
A stroke is an interruption of blood flow to an area of the brain that lasts long enough to cause permanent damage to the brain- medical emergency
Ischemia
A less-than-normal amount of blood flow to part of your body. This lack of blood flow means your tissues aren’t getting the oxygen they need.
Risk factors of TIA and stroke
-Smoking
-Drug and alcohol abuse
-Inactivity
-Poor diet
-Diabetes
-Hyperlipidaemia
Arthralgia
Pain specific to skeleton
Stenosis
Narrowing, rigidity or loss of function of previous flexible anatomical functionn
Neuralgia
Pain specific to nervous system
Myalgia
Pain specific to muscles
Visceral pain
Pain specific to organs
Metabolic syndrome
Umbrella term for things like diabetes, sleep apnoea, obesity, cardiovascular disease and fatty liver disease
Exacerbation
Worsening of a chronic condition requiring additional treatments and temporarily reducing patients health
Dementia
Decline in thinking and memory
Parkinson’s
Progressive brain disorder causing movement problems, tremors, stiffness and balance issues
Multiple sclerosis
Chronic disease affecting brain and spinal cord. Immune system attacking protective covering of nerve fibers
Cerebrovascular accident
Stroke
Motor neuron disease
Disease affecting brain and nerves
