Neutropenia and stem cell mobilisation Flashcards
(7 cards)
What is neutropenia?
A low neutrophil count (<1.5 x 10⁹/L).
Why is neutropenia a concern in chemotherapy patients?
It increases the risk of infection and sepsis, especially with high-intensity chemotherapy.
What is rhG-CSF and what does it do?
Recombinant human granulocyte-colony stimulating factor; it stimulates neutrophil production and reduces the duration of chemotherapy-induced neutropenia.
Name four granulocyte-colony stimulating factors (G-CSFs).
Filgrastim, lenograstim, pegfilgrastim, lipegfilgrastim.
What is stem cell mobilization?
Moving stem cells from bone marrow to bloodstream using G-CSF before stem cell collection.
What is the main use of filgrastim?
To stimulate neutrophil production and reduce chemotherapy-induced neutropenia.
Does filgrastim reduce the risk of febrile neutropenia?
Yes, it may reduce the incidence of febrile neutropenia.
