Selenium and zinc deficiency Flashcards
(8 cards)
What are key functions of selenium in the body?
Antioxidant activity, thyroid support, immune function, reproduction, and DNA production.
What are common causes of selenium deficiency?
Inadequate diet or prolonged parenteral nutrition.
When should selenium supplements be given?
Only when there is good evidence of deficiency.
What are key functions of zinc in the body?
Supports the immune system, wound healing, and DNA/protein synthesis.
Which patients are at higher risk of zinc deficiency?
Those with malnutrition, alcoholism, IBD, and malabsorption syndromes.
What condition is treated with zinc?
Wilson’s disease.
Wilson’s disease is a genetic disorder characterized by the excess build-up of copper in the body. Symptoms are typically related to the brain and liver. Liver-related symptoms include vomiting, weakness, fluid build-up in the abdomen, swelling of the legs, yellowish skin, and itchiness.
Is long-term high-dose zinc supplementation safe?
No, it should be limited due to risks like GI effects, copper deficiency, reduced immunity, anaemia, and genitourinary issues.
Does parenteral nutrition typically include zinc?
Yes, trace amounts are usually included.
