Q

What regulates production of neutrophils?

A

C/EBP alpha - regulates steady state proliferation

C/EBP beta - activated by cytokines/PAMPs to upregulate neutrophil proliferation

Q

Describe the stages of neutrophil rolling

A
  • Rolling - epithelial cell expresses P and E selectins that recognise s-Lex on neutrophil. Weak attachment so causes neutrophil to ‘roll’ on membrane
  • Adhesion - integrins on neutrophil activated by binding to ICAM1 on epithelial membrane. Causes the neutrophil to stop rolling.
  • Diapedesis - neutrophil starts to squeeze through the epithelial cells
  • Chemotaxis - chemokines bind to neutrophil and causes polarisation and directed movement along concentration gradient.
