NEWTON'S LAW OF UNIVERSAL GRAVITATION Flashcards
(4 cards)
law of universal gravitation
a force of gravitational attraction exists between any two objects in the universe that have mass. this force of attraction is directly proportional to the product of the masses of the objects and inversely proportional to the squared distance between their centers of gravity
difference between mass and weight
mass(scalar) is the amount of matter and is the same anywhere whereas weight(vector) is the force with which Earth or another planet attracts an object towards its center and it differs from place to place and depends on the mass and radius of the planet
weightlessness
is when only gravitational force is exerted on an object or person
when is weightlessness experienced
- free-fall in a lift or vacuum
- free-fall in a plane or spacecraft
- objects far away from stars or planets
