VECTORS IN 2D Flashcards
(32 cards)
what is a scalar?
a physical quantity that has only magnitude
examples of a scalar
- mass, time, distance
- volume
- energy, work
- power
- electric current
- electrical potential difference
- coefficient of friction
what is a vector?
a physical quantity that has magnitude and direction
in a vector what does the length of the arrow represent?
magnitude of the vector
in a vector what does the arrowhead indicate?
direction of the vector and the end of the line
give the characteristics of a force
- is a push or pull
- is a vector
- has a symbol f
- is measured in newton
2 different types of forces
- contact force
2. non-contact force
what is a non-contact force?
a force that acts over a distance
examples of non-contact forces
- magnetic force
- electrostatic force
- gravitational force
what is a contact force?
when two objects are in contact with each other
examples of a contact force
- applied force
- friction
- normal force
- tension
- air friction
- compression
define applied force
when a person or object exerts a force on another force/ object
give characteristics of applied force
- is in the same line as the direction of movement
2. is at an angle to the direction of movement
what is friction force?
is the force that opposes the motion of an object and is parallel to the surface
characteristics of friction force
- acts in opposite direction to the movement/attempted movement
- acts parallel to the surface on which the object makes contact
what is normal force?
the force/component of a force that a surface exerts on an object in contact with the surface, perpendicular to the surface
characteristics of normal force
- it works on the object which is resting on or against it
2. is a supporting force that is equal and opposite to the force of the object acting on the contact surface
characteristics of tension force
- when a cable/rope is being pulled, tension is being exerted on it
- tension in the rope is constant throughout and the direction is not only in one direction
- mass of the rope is negligible unless instructed otherwise
what is air resistance?
a resistant force exerted by the collisions of air particles on a moving object and acts in the opposite direction to movement
what is compression?
force exerted on a compressed spring
2 types of diagrams used to indicate forces acting on body/object
- force diagram
2. free body diagram
2 types of friction force
- static friction
2. kinetic friction
difference between static and kinetic friction
static friction is only for two objects at rest relative to one another whereas kinetic friction is only for two objects in motion relative to one another
factors affecting frictional force
- normal force
2. surface type
