newton's laws of motion Flashcards
(17 cards)
What is force?
A push or pull
Force can cause an object to change its velocity.
Inertia is…
The tendency for an object to resist a change in motion
Inertia is directly related to mass.
What does Newton’s 1st law of Motion state?
An object at rest stays at rest and an object in motion stays in motion until acted on by an unbalanced force.
What does Newton’s 2nd law of Motion say?
Acceleration is proportional to the force applied to an object but inversely proportional to its mass.
What is the formula for Newton’s second law?
F=ma
What does Newton’s 3rd law of Motion state?
For every action there is an equal and opposite reaction.
What units is Force measured in?
Newtons
What causes no change in motion?
Balanced forces
Why do the blocks fly off the car when it crashed into the wall?
They are in motion and will stay in motion until an unbalanced force acts on them.
Why does the clothes pin fall into the cup when the card is moved?
There is no unbalanced force acting on it to overcome inertia until the card is moved.
Which of the rocks will have the greatest acceleration if pulled with 50 N of force?
The small rock, as its mass will be less.
What is velocity?
Speed in a given direction
How much force is required to move a 10 kg object that is accelerating at 2 m/s?
20 N
How fast will an object accelerate if its mass is 2 kg and it is pushed with a force of 10 N?
5 m/s/s
What is the net force acting on the box if your friend is pushing on a box with 10 N of force and you’re pushing the opposite side with 5 N of force?
5 N away from your friend
What is the net force/direction of the box if your friend is pushing on a box with 20 N of force on the left and you’re pushing the right side with 20 N of force?
0 N - not moving
What is acceleration?
The change in velocity in a given period of time.
