Newton Sixth Form Flashcards
Tell us about a time you supported someone in their learning or development:
During a university coding project, peer was struggling on implementing a certain feature in our project
He was struggling with to understand how to implement this feature, so I offered my help to develop it with him
I first tried to explain the concept to him, trying to build their understanding. Then I walked through an example, I did live coding, explaining my actions. I then envourage him to try have a go implementing it with me guiding him and answering any questions.
Through practically working through some examples he solidified his understanding as was able to complete his task.
Tell us about a time you had to quickly build rapport with someone
While working at WHSmith, I was often sent to different branches to help out, meaning I was constantly meeting new coworkers.
On my first day at one of the busiest locations, I had to collaborate closely with a team I’d never worked with before to manage a delivery and restock during a rush.
I introduced myself straight away, asked questions to understand their usual process, and showed a positive attitude and offered to help wherever I could.
By the end of the shift, we were working as if we’d regularly collaborated. I have since returned to this branch as the teamwork was very beneficial for the business operations.
Why teaching?
I enjoy supporting others in their learning
Important to have someone in your corner, someone who listens, guids, and helps you stay on track
During my own academic journey, there were times I struggled, and I often wished I had that kind of personalised support.
Being a supervisor I think there’s much more to teaching, it’s about checking in with the student, building relationships and encouragement, and helping the student find confidence in themselves both academically and personally.
Why Newton Sixth Form?
I have chosen Newton as I really admire your approach to education
To me the Climate, Care, and Curriculum model stands out to me,
Shows the focus on not only academic performance but creating the right environment for students to grow into great characters.
I especially appreciate the supervision system, inspired by Oxford and Cambridge.
Idea of building strong supportive relationships between students and educators resonates with me and something I’d love to be a part of.
I feel confident to support the students through the UK inspired curriculum, having studied it myself.
More than anything, Newton fe in els like a place that values both staff and students, and i’d be excited to contribute to that kind of community.
How would you contribute to the school culture?
By being a positive and approachable presence, someone students feel comfortable turning to, not just for academic help but also for support and encouragement.
Building trust and showing students that they’re seen and valued.
I’d also bring plenty of energy and enthusiasm, helping create an environment where students feel motivated, challenged and supported.
I am someone who communicates well, works well in a team, and genuinely cares about helping others grow.
