non-emergency practises- inconvenience
other public sector jobs can strike

NO: patient at risk if A&E
public regard doctors as high paid job- striking my seem un-professional and lose trust

Issue: MMR vaccine 2013 measles epidemic

Wakefield published research paper linking MMR vaccine and autism+ bowel disease

But:

  1. No researches able to confirm
  2. Reporter produced evidence that he applied for a patent on single- Jab measles before campaign, planned for new medical tests for profit- autistic entercolitis

  4. Research based on 12 cases- 5 of which pre existing developmental concerns
  5. Some children reported symptoms days after but actually months

GMC investigated:

  1. Paid conduct study solicitors of children believed to be harmed
  2. Ordered investigations without approval of departments ethic board
  3. Dishonest- bought blood samples for £5 from sons bday party
  4. Study not approved by ethics committee

Compliance with basic requirements- focus on appraisal process

Cons:
Will not stop another shipman
May not ensure proper management of individuals at other times of the year
May be too late (appraisal points once a year)
May require info that trusts to do not hold
