Nile Delta Flashcards
(11 cards)
What type of coastal landscape is the Nile Delta
A low energy coastline
Where is the Nile Delta located
In the African Continent found in northern Egypt. The mouth is on the Mediterranean.
What is the length of the Nile Delta and its catchment area
The length is 6650km
Catchment area is 3million km2
Describe the NW winds over the Mediterranean
Occurs for most of the year which enhances the constant eastward movement of water and sediment
What is the estimated surface current velocity
ranges from 9.26 to 13.5 cm/s.
Why is the Mediterranean known as the tideless win
Has very limited tides due to the fact its mostly landlocked. It has a micro tidal range of approximately 50cm.
What does the easterly movement of waves encourage
It encourages marine transformational processes such as suspension with its loads made up of very fine material.
What process dominates over the others
Longshore drift due to the very low energy and constructive waves transporting sediment east.
How is the Nile delta likely to change overtime and why
Is set to decrease in size in result of rising sea levels. The rate of deposition has exceeded erosion for 3000 years.
What are the predicted changes of a 0.5m sea level rise
Affected population to be 3.8 million
Affected cropland is estimated to be 1800km2/year
What is the inter-relation between the Rosetta promontory and the Nile
Rosetta promontory is the result of deposition where the Nile enters the Mediterranean.
