North yorkshire coastline Flashcards
(17 cards)
What type of coastline is high energy
North Yorkshire coast
Direction of prevailing wind
From the NE
Direction of the dominant waves
from the N / NE
What is the name of the sediment cell the north Yorkshire coast is in
Sediment cell one from St Abbs head to Flamborough Head
Why does Saltburn receive the highest amount of inputs of energy
As it is north facing so there is a higher wave energy input there
Do rates of erosion vary or stay constant, why and name some examples.
They vary due to the variations and different resistances in the 6 different geologies along the coastline. Some less resistant geologies would be clay eroding at 0.8m a year.
How is sediment supplied to the coastline
Through erosion of cliff sediment including sandstone and chalk.
What river is there and how much sediment does it provide
The river Esk enters the north sea at Whitby however it only supplies a limited amount of sediment due to reinforced banks along its course.
What type of geology is at Flamborough head
Very resistant chalk.
What type of geology is at Filey Bay
Soft clay.
Which is very porous and impermeable so is easily eroded.
Name the five coastal landforms found along the NYC
Cliffs
Shore platforms
Headlands and Bays
Landforms on headlands
Beaches
What are the characteristics of beaches
Low energy environment
Slow rate of accumulation
High energy waves remove sediment.
Longshore drift occurs
Describe the cliffs at Flamborough head
Horizontally bedded so cliff profiles are vertically faced.
Chalk geology so physically strong and has tightly bonded mineral particles.
Explain why the Saltburn to Flamborough head coastline consists of bays and headlands.
As a result of the discordant coastline which has a multitude of different geologies along the stretch of coastline so therefore more resistant rocks will not erode as quickly as weaker which produces bays.
Which physical factors are involved in creating cliff characteristics
Geology
Waves
Tide
What are the two types of tides and explain them
Neap tides: A low tide or one that is lower than average which occurs twice a month
Spring tides: When the sun and moon are in alignment they create a strong gravitational force which brings the highest and lowest tides of the month
Which three months have the highest knots of wind and how high are they
January, February, December
35+knots
