Q

whats a symbiotic relationship

A

living in, or being a close physical association (as in mutualism or commensalism) between two or more dissimilar organisms.

Q

whats fixation?

A

Nitrogen fixing bacteria convert nitrogen into the soil to ammonia which can be taken up by some plants.

Q

whats nitrificaiton

A

Ammonium converted into nitrate and nitrite (NO2-) through work of nitrifying bacteria.

Q

Denitrification?

A

is the final aspect of the nitrogen cycle. This process is performed by a variety of microscopic bacteria, fungi, and other organisms. Nitrates in the soil are broken down by these organisms, and nitrogen is released into the atmosphere.

Q

summary basically

A

-Nitrogen enters the air (denitrification)
-bacteria fixes nitrogen into organic compounds that plants can absorb
-plants obtain nitrogen
-Herbivores consume nitrogen when eating plants
-decomposers like bacteria and fungi convert ammonia from animal poop and dead animals and plants into ammonium ions
-bacteria convert these ions into nitrites, then nitrates, which plants can take up or leach through the ground
-some bacteria convert nitrates into nitrogen gas (denitrification) and restart the cycle.
