Some of the typical duties and responsibilities of a Radiation Safety Officer (RSO) include ensuring that

(1) Unsafe activities involving licensed materials are stopped,
(2) radiation exposures are as low as reasonably achievable (ALARA),
(3) material accountability and disposal,
(4) interaction with Nuclear Regulatory Commission (NRC),
(5) timely and accurate reporting and maintenance of appropriate records,
(6) annual program audits,
(7) proper use and routine maintenance,
(8) personnel training, and
(9) investigation of incidents involving byproduct material (e.g., medical events).
