When did Harold Godwinson become King?
6th January 1066 the day after Edwards death. Due to a nomination on Edwards death bed.
How was Harold supported?
The anglo saxon nobles supported him. He had the backing of the witan. He was the Earl of Wesse, the most important Earl in Anglo- saxon England. He acted as Edwards duputy and was his brother in law.
Why was William furious at the crown of Harold Godwinson?
William claimed Edward had promised him the thrown in 1051. Then in 1064 on a visit to normandy Harold had taken an oath to support Williams claim to the thrown. Harold admitted to this but claimed he was a prisoner at the time so it didnt count as he was forced
What did the Pope give to William
A papal banner as William promised to bring the old fashioned english church into line. The pope also said Harold should not be king as he was an oath breaker.
