Norms Flashcards
(23 cards)
Goal is to yield info on a testtaker’s standing or ranking relative to some comparison group of test taker
Norm-referenced testing and assessment
Test performance data of a particular group of testtakers that are designed for use as a reference when evaluating or interpreting individual test scores
Norms
Group of people whose performance on a particular test is analyzed for reference in evaluating the performance of individual test takers
Normative sample
Descriptive statistics based on a group of testtakers in a given period of time rather than on norms obtained by formal sampling methods
User norms/Program norms
Process of administering a test to a representative sample of testtakers for the purpose of establishing norms
Standardization
Defined group of the population for which the test is designed; at least one common characteristic
Sampling
The process of developing a sample based on specific subgroups (strata) of a population (e.g. rich, middle class, Catholics)
Stratified sampling
Randomly selecting some sample because we believe it to be representative of the population
Purposive sampling
Selecting some people to be part of a sample because they are readily available, not because they are most representative of the population being studied; done because of budgetary limitation or other constraints
Incidental/ convenience sampling
Difference between standardization sample and normative sample
Test retains yang pagkastandard na mao najud ang rules and all but normative sample kay pwedi mabag o kay ma underrepresent ang original sample data (ex. tiguwang ang mga samples sauna nya kailangan ug mga young ppl)
Types of norms
percentile, age, grade, subgroup norm, local norms
Problem with percentiles
Real differences between raw scores may be minimized near the ends of distribution and exaggerated in the middle
Average performance of different samples of testtakers who were at various ages at the time the test was administered
Age norms
Average test performance of testtakers in a given school grade and performance compared to fellow students in the same grade
grade norms
What are age norms and grade norms?
Developmental norms
Derived from a normative sample that was nationally representative of the population at the time the norming study was conducted
National norms
An equivalency table for scores on two nationally standardized tests designed to measure the same thing
National achor norms
Norms for any defined group within a larger group; used for Substance-abuse assessment
Subgroup norms
Local population’s performance on some test; created from national norms
Local norms
Distribution of scores obtained on the test from one group of tettakers as the basis for the calculation of test scores for future administrations of test
Fixed reference group scoring system
Evaluate score with a reference to a set standard
Criterion referenced testing and assessment
Also known as content/domain-referenced testing; “mastery tests”
Criterion-referenced testing
Limitations of criterion-referenced tests
- if strictly followed, potentially important info sa usa ka tao relative sa others is lost
- has little meaningful application at the upper end of knowledge/skill continuum
