NPDB - JC
The NPDB is to be queried at initial granting of clinical privileges, when a new (additional) privilege(s) is requested, and at the time of renewal of privileges for information on adverse privileging actions taken by other healthcare entities on licensed independent practitioners. The NPDB also provides additional information on malpractice payments, licensure disciplinary actions, adverse actions taken by professional societies against membership, and Medicare/Medicaid Sanctions. the Health Care quality Improvement act of 1986 established the NPDB, thus requiring appropriate agencies to report information related to medical malpractice payments, licensure disciplinary actions, adverse clinical privilege actions taken by a healthcare entity (such as hospitals, ambulatory care centers, health maintenance organizations and group practices) , and adverse actions affecting professional society membership of physicians and dentists. The act allows for organizations to report adverse professional actions taken against other healthcare practitioners other than physicians and dentists, such as podiatrists, psychologists, advanced practice nurses, and physician assistants. The act also requires hospitals and certain other authorized healthcare entities to query the NPDB at initial appointment and when granting clinical privileges an at least every two years thereafter.
