Presumptive tuberculosis
2 weeks or longer of any of the following
Cardinal symptoms
Cough
Unexplained fever
Unexplained weight loss
Night sweats OR
Chest X-ray finding suggestive of TB
Adults defined as
> = 15 years old
New
1.Refers to a patient who has never had treatment for TB
2. Who has taken anti-TB drugs for less than 1 month
Previously treated for TB
who has received one moth or more of anti TB drugs in the past
Turnaround time
Time from collection of first sputum to initiation of treatment for TB
Desired turn around time: 5 days
A rapid diagnostic test such as Xpert MTB/RIF
Primary diagnostic test for PTV and EPTB in adults and children
Alternative diagnostic test if xpert is not accessible
Smear microscopy (brightfield or fluorescence microscopy)
Loop mediated isothermal amplification (TB LAMP)
Only contraindication to collecting sputum for bacteriological diagnosis of TB
Massive hemoptysis (expectoration of large volumes of blood from the respiratory tract)
Volume of sputum
1 ml for Xpert MTB/RIF and TB LAMP
3-5 ml for SM
