Nuclear energy debated Flashcards
(16 cards)
Does nuclear energy have high efficiency?
Yes, it has higher efficiency than over energy sources.
Why does nuclear energy have higher efficiency?
because of the high density of energy produced by nuclear powerplants. Moreover, less fuel is required to process nuclear energy as opposed to processing coal and oil
What is the significant element in the process of nuclear fission?
Uranium
How long can the uranium on earth last?
70 to 80 years.
Nuclear plants are capable of meeting the demands of energy without interruption for…
at least a year so long as no maintenance work is required.
Does nuclear energy produce release carbon?
No, it does not release carbon dioxide so is cleaner, it also has lower greenhouse emissions.
How long can the operation of a nuclear powerplant last?
40-60 years
Do nuclear powerplants need regular maintenance?
No
How is nuclear energy harmful?
It has an increading number of nuclear reactors which puts the health and safety of people living in the vicinity in line.
What happened in the 1970s in Ohio?
The core of one of the reactors was damaged, an accident almost occured during inspection and was said to have been a result of poor maintenance.
What is plutonium?
a substance that is produced when fuel is re-processed, is used to create bombs. If this gets stolen it can result in destruction and potential death
How much does it cost to build a 1,000 megawatt power plant?
$2 billion
How long does it take to build a powerplant?
5 years
What is the most major setback of nuclear powerplants?
A lack of long-term waste disposal facilities.
Where is nuclear waste stored?
Wastes are stored on the grounds of these power plants snd sooner or later, there will be no space left to contain these nuclear wastes.
What can happen if there’s a leak?
The radioactive by-product of nuclear energy is toxic and can cause burns, cancer, blood diseases and bone decay.
