NUTRITION 1,2,3 and 4 Flashcards
(17 cards)
Define:
Nutrients
Nutrients are subtances the body need to sustain the life of cells
Nutrients allow cells to…
(list the 4 processes)
Build cellular structures,repair,grow and multiply
Nutrients can be classified as…
(2 types)
Organic/Inorganic Nutriens
Define:
Organic Nutrients
Organic nutrients are nutrients produced by living organisms and supply energy
Ex: Carbohydrates, Fats, Proteins and Vitamins
Define:
Inorganic Nutrients
Inorganic nutrients are found in living organisms and dont supply energy
Ex: Minerals, Water and O2
List the 4 organic nutrients
Carbohydrates, Fats, Proteins and Vitamins
List the 3 inorganic nutrients
Minerals, Water and O2
DefineL:
Carbohydrates
Carbohydrates are water soluble molecules made of Carbon, 02 and H, they are the main energy source of cells and build structures
Define:
Fats
Fats are water insoluble molecules made of Carbon, O2 and H, they are the main energy reserve and create cellular membranes
Define:
Proteins
Proteins are molecules made of Carbon, 02, H and N, they synthesize structures and are the ultimate energy source
They are made of 20 amino acids, which 10 are ESSENTIALL AMINO ACIDS
What are the 2 types of Carbohydrates?(Define and give an example for each)
- Simple Carbs are easily taken in (ORANGE JUICE)
- Complex Carbs arent directly taken in and are made of long chains of glucose (PASTA)
What are the 3 types of Fats?(Define and give an example for each)
1.Unsaturated Fats are liquid at room temp and are healthy(OLIVE OIL)
2.Saturated Fats are solid at room temp and are unhealthy(BUTTER)
3.Trans Fats are unsaturated fats turned industrially into saturated fats(PASTRIES)
What are the 2 types of Proteins?(What is their origin and give an example for each)
1.Complete Proteins are found in foods of animal origin and contain the 10 ESSENTIAL AMINO ACIDS
2.Incomplete Proteins are found in foods of plant origin and dont have all the 10 ESSENTIAL AMINO ACIDS
Define:
Vitamins
Vitamins are need in small quantities and are essential for regulating cellular processes
What are the 2 types of Vitamins?(Define and give an example for each)
1.Fat soluble vitamins are stored in the tissues(VITAMIN A)
2.Water soluble vitamins cant be stored and need to be taken daily (VITAMIN C)
Define:
Minerals
Minerals regulate internal processes and are used as building materials
Give an example for a mineral, where its found and what is its function
Iron, found in meat and enables red blood cells to carry 02
