When is a baby most susceptible to baby bottle tooth decay?
Between six months and 2 years. Teeth are in the mouth until around age 6
What causes baby bottle tooth decay?
When sweetened liquids or milk are left on teeth for long periods. Bacteria feeds on these substances producing acids which can attack teeth for up to 20 minutes. Many attacks cause decay and if noticed it may be too late.

Prevention of tooth decay?
- Don’t allow child to fall asleep with bottle
- After feeding wipe babies gums with gauze. Begin brushing when first tooth appears
- Avoid filling bottle with sugar and soft drinks
What is the recommendation for extent of breast feeding? ( world health organization)
- exclusive breast feeding for 6 months with continued breast feeding until 1 year with foods being introduced at six months for iron purposes.
- 2 years in third world countries

Exclusive breast feeding for 6 months with foods introduced at that point with continued breast feeding for optimal growth and development and protection
What is colostrum and when is it made?
- made during end of pregnancy
- yellowish substance very high in protein and low in fat
- contains immunoglobulins(antibodies)
Baby benefits of breast feeding?
- Decrease chance of diarrhea or severity of it
- Lowers respiratory infection
- Reduced chance of ear infection
- Decreases chance of bacterial meningitis
- Decrease chance for urinary tract infection
- Decreases childhood obesity
- Easily digested, less spit up

- Possible enhancement of cognitive development

- Use of drugs

Galactosemia?
The inability to break down galactose. It can accumulate and cause damage.
What is PKU?
A lack of an enzyme that cannot breakdown an amino acid.
Newborn signs of hunger?
Rooting, activity, mouthing, increased alertness
How often do you nurse a newborn?
Every 2 hours usually 10-15 min long
