name the nutrients that make up a balanced diet
carbohydrate, protein, lipid, vitamins, minerals, water and dietary fibre
what are the main sources of carbohydrates?
bread, rice, pasta, sugar, potatoes
what are the main sources of protein?
beans, fish, meat, cheese
what are the main sources of fats?
oil, butter, avocados, milk, oily fish, eggs
what are the main sources of vitamin A?
carrots, fish liver oil, liver, butter
what are the main sources of vitamin C?
fruit (especially citrus), vegetables
what are the main sources of vitamin D?
fish liver oils, also made in skin in sunlight
what are the main sources of calcium?
spinach (vegetables), dairy products, fish, bread
what are the main sources of iron?
red meat, liver, eggs, some vegetables
what are the main sources of fibre?
corn, some vegetables

used to make haemoglobin in red blood cells which helps carry oxygen

iron - gets tired easily, feels weak, skin becomes pale, lips and nails become dull and colourless. ways to treat: vegetables, meat, beans
what causes scurvy and what are the symptoms and ways to treat this?
vitamin C - lethargy, skin spots, bleeding gums, tooth loss, fever, death. ways to treat: oranges, citrus fruits, cabbage
what causes beriberi and what are the symptoms and ways to treat this?
vitamin B - anorexia, heaviness, weakness. affects health of eyes, skin, growth. ways to treat: milk, fish, meat, cereal, eggs
what causes rickets and what are the symptoms and ways to treat this?
vitamin D - muscles and bones become soft which causes permanent deformities. ways to treat: milk, fish, meat, butter, eggs
