ao3: obedience may be dispositional; not situational; cannot explain all types of diobedience
A significant minority of milgrams ppts disobeyed despited recognising the experimenters scientific authority.
Adorno’s research showed that people who scored high on f scale disliked the weak and identified with strong people.Sugguests that some people may be more/less obedient than others, as sugguested by authoritarian explanation, due to things such as an individuals personality and childhood.
Therefore the ……. explanation cannot explain all types of disobedience
what is legitmacy of authority

authority figures excercise social power
What is legitmacy of authority increased by
- physical symbols e.g. uniform
- setting e.g. legal court setting
legitmacy of authority stems from what we learn in…
childhood
destructive authority
when does legitmacy of authority become problematic
People like powerful leaders e.g. HITLER, cause chaos and become destructive in society. The way they behave is described as cruel and dangerous.
legitmacy of authority
ao3: explain cultural differences
in a milgram style study - researchers found that 16% of austrailian female ppts went up 450v. However in a different study 85% of german ppts went up to 450v.
This means in some cultures, authority is morely to be accpeted as legitmate and so is entitles to obedience from individuals.
This reflects the diiferent ways that societies are structured and how people are expected to obey.
legitmacy of authority
ao3: research support - bickmans study
Bickman - 3 conderates in 3 diff outfits; milkman, suit and tie, security guard.
Confed stood in the street and asked members of public to perform tasks e.g. pick up litter.
People twice as likely to obey security guard than suit and tie conferate.
Supports view that people who percieve someone of having higher status, leads to inceased obedience.
