resistance to social influence - social support and locus of control Flashcards

(11 cards)

1
Q

what is social support

A

The existance of others who resist pressure to conform/obey keads to an increase in people to disobey and not conform.

Q

social support

Research support for resisitng obedience

A

In a milgram variation, 2 confederates were added with the ppt who disobeyed to giving electric shocks and withdrew early. This led to obedience dropping from 65% to 10% (- as it acts as a ‘model’ for the ppts to copy.) This shows that people are morely to resist pressure to obey if they have social support.

Q

social support

research support for resisting conformity

A

For example in a Unamity variation of asch’s experiment - Asch added a confederate who disagreed with other confederates and actually gave correct answers. This led to conformity dropping to 5% as the confederate acted as a ‘model’ and gave ppts the confidence to not conform. Therefore thsi shows that people are more likely to resist pressure to conform if they have social support.

Q

what is an external LOC

A

Events decided by things outside of our control. e.g. if they fail an exam, people may blame the quality of resourecs they were given rather than their own abilities to revise.

Q

What is the LOC continum

A

LOC lies on a scale.

(e.g. imagine a line where one side of the spectrum in high internal loc and the other side is high external loc. Where the further you get to the middle is low external and internal loc.

Q

loc

ao3: contradictory research

A

Researchers did an meta analysis of american LOC studies. They found out that overtime more people showed disobedience and resisted pressure, but also showed more external LOC. This contradicts the current theory where we expect people who disobey to have a internal loc. Thierefore this decreases the validity of the theory/ loc is not a valid explanation as to why people resis social support.

Q

loc

ao3: loc and resistance to social influence is merely correlational

A

For example other factors may impact a person to resist social influence such as personal morality where a personal may feel its morally wrong to conform/ obey in a situation. Furthermore, a persoon of high social status may feel empowered to resist social influence.

Q

loc

research support

A

researchers replicated milgrams baseline study and measured where ppts had internal or external loc.
Found that 37% of internal didnt continue to highest shock lvl while for externals it was 23%.
Shows that internals showed greater resistance to authority.
Therefore this shows that the loc explanation is a valid explanation for why people resist social influence.
