Occupational Perspective of Human Development Flashcards
(18 cards)
Ability to perform those tasks that make it possible to carry out occupational roles in a satisfying manner appropriate for the individual’s developmental stage, culture, and environment (Pedretti)
Occupational Performance
Groups of activities and tasks of everyday life, named, organized, and given value and meaning by individuals and a culture (CAOT)
Occupation
Changes in the structure, thought, or behavior of a person that occurs as a function of both biologic and environmental influences
Human Development
Biologic proliferation of cells, leading to an additive increase in size or number of cells
Growth
Emergence or unfolding of individual’s unique genetic potential; occurs more individualistic and in variable schedule
Maturation
Process that produces a progressive series of changes that are orderly and coherent and which lead to and end with maturity
Development
Act or process of maturing or acquiring skills ranging from simple to complex
Development
A fundamental process in human development that involves the acquisition of new behavior as influenced by interaction with environment
Learning
Some behaviors are not acquired until sufficient growth and maturation have occurred irrespective of the amount of exposure
Readiness
A point where a skill will not be lost even if the child stops performing it for a while
Level of Fixity
Tasks that are expected to be accomplished along the way; arise at an approximate period in a person’s life
Developmental Tasks
Mastery of specific skills or interaction at certain stage lays the groundwork for more mature behaviors to unfold
Developmental Tasks
Sources of Developmental Tasks:
1-3
- Physical Maturation
- Cultural and Societal Pressure
- Personal Values and Aspirations
Humans develop ________ in areas of neurophysiological, physical, and psychosocial growth, acquiring skills at a specific period of time
Horizontally
Humans develop ________ in a continuous process in each of these areas as they age
Longitudinally
Roles of OT in Human Development:
1-2
- Facilitation of growth and development
2. Habilitation and Rehabilitation
Principles of Motor Development:
1-4
- Cephalocaudal
- Proximodistal
- Gross control to Fine control
- Up from gravity
Occupation-based model: recognizes that all factors contributing to the motor behavior are important; gives importance on the interaction of the person, environment, and occupation
Systems Approach
