-members of a discourse community share inferential frameworks
-asymmetrical relationships
-consists of implicit ways of thinking, communicating and behaving
pros: framework provides a way to understand dynamics of institutional discourses; provides insight to how societal structures and dynamics are maintained
cons:overlooks instances of spontaneity, resistance or subversion in institutional conversations; doesn’t mention social cues and non verbal cues
-discourse is form from roles. eg: doctor/ patient
