Atlantic ocean
2nd biggest ocean
Pacific ocean
biggest ocean
Salinity
Salinity is the saltiness or dissolved inorganic salt content of a body of water.
surface zone
known as the sunlight zone because this is where most of the visible light exists
Thermocline
a steep temperature gradient in a body of water such as a lake
deep zone
is the lowest layer in the ocean, existing below the thermocline and above the seabed
water cycle
describes the continuous movement of water on, above and below the surface of the Earth
Evaporation
a type of vaporization that occurs on the surface of a liquid as it changes into the gas phase.
Condensation
water which collects as droplets on a cold surface when humid air is in contact with it.
Precipitation
any product of the condensation of atmospheric water vapor that falls under gravity from clouds.
continental shelf
a portion of a continent that is submerged under an area of relatively shallow water known as a shelf sea.
continental slope
the slope between the outer edge of the continental shelf and the deep ocean floor
continental rise
a sediment underwater feature found between the continental slope and the abyssal plain.
abyssal plain
an underwater plain on the deep ocean floor usually found at depths between 3,000 meters and 6,000 meters.
mid-ocean ridge
a seafloor mountain system formed by plate tectonics. It typically has a depth of 2,600 meters and rises about two kilometers above the deepest portion of an ocean basin.
rift valley
a large elongated depression with steep walls formed by the downward displacement of a block of the earth’s surface between nearly parallel faults or fault systems.
Seamount
a large geologic landform that rises from the ocean floor but that does not reach to the water’s surface, and thus is not an island, islet or cliff-rock.
ocean trench
topographic depressions of the seafloor, relatively narrow in width, but very long. These oceanographic features are the deepest parts of the ocean floor.
Plankton
the diverse collection of organisms that live in large bodies of water and are unable to swim against a current.
Nekton
Nekton or necton refers to the aggregate of actively swimming aquatic organisms in a body of water.
Benthos
the community of organisms that live on, in, or near the seabed, river, lake, or stream bottom
