Oceans Flashcards
(13 cards)
Why are oceans vital to earth?
Marine ecosystems
takes up 2/3 of the earth
contains different fish species
food supply
biodiversity
human tourism and job opportunites
How do oceans relate to climate change?
Oceans help produce oxygen and absorb carbon.
climate regulation
Do you know the locations of the oceans?
GET BACK TO REVISING YOU LAZY COWWWW. DONT LET YOUR OPS GET HIGHER THAN YOU OR IT WILL HAUNT YOU FOREVER AND I WILL NEVER FORGIVE YOU. Anywayss good luck revising queennn!!!jfeivb
Ways plastic reaches the ocean
Wind blown
Sewage and drainage
landfills
streams and rivers
littering
How is single use plastic produced?
1) Animals die and turn into oil
2) oil is extracted by companies
3) Sent to plastic processing places
4) Turns into nurdles and sent to factories
5) shipped and driven to customers and used once
6) Thrown into landfill or end up in ocean
Reasons to ban single use plastic
Reduces plastic pollution
Helps conserve biodiversity
Less harm to environment
Reasons to keep single use plastic
Other materials are less strong and less durable
Plastic is needed in medical fields and food safety.
Examples of plastics negative impacts
( Oceans and Rivers)
Citarum river - Indonesia
8 billion tons of plastic produced and half ends up in oceans. 1 mile long of plastic covering the whole river
2000 T of plastic flow down Citarum daily
No government help
Examples of plastics negative impacts
( Wildlife)
Lorde Howe Island - Flesh footed Shearwater
Should be fed nutritious diet of fish but parents mistake it for plastic
Stomachs fill with plastic
~20 pieces of plastic per chick on a good day
Increasing number of affected and more plastic accumulating in stomachs
What is the great Pacific Garbage Patch?
A collection of marine debris in the North Pacific Ocean
What is a gyre?
A rotating ocean current
How is the GPGP formed
The marine debris called microplastics concentrated together to create ‘garbage patches’ that are formed by gyres. It is difficult to remove these microplastics and they stuck in the gyre current.
What are nurdles and why are they bad?
Nurdles are small pellets used by industries to melt down and make plastic goods. They are environmentally bad as we cant see them clearly in oceans and nurdles soak up pollutants and become toxic. This disrupts the food chain
