Pearl Harbour - Facts
Date of attack: December 7, 1941.
Location: Pearl Harbor is a U.S. naval base located in Hawaii.
Surprise attack: The attack was a surprise military strike by the Japanese, aimed at weakening the U.S. Pacific Fleet.
Casualties: Over 2,400 Americans were killed, and around 1,000 were wounded.
21 U.S. ships were damaged or destroyed, including 8 battleships—most famously the USS Arizona.
About 300 American aircraft were destroyed or damaged.
Japan’s goal: Japan aimed to cripple U.S. naval power to prevent interference with its expansion in Asia.
U.S. response: The next day, December 8, 1941, the United States declared war on Japan, officially entering World War II.
“A date which will live in infamy”: U.S. President Franklin D. Roosevelt used this phrase in his speech to Congress following the attack.
