Proloog
Titel: Proloog
Verteller: Derdepersoonsverteller / alomteenwoordige verteller.
Ruimte: Eckardt se huis; sy pa se studeerkamer.
Tyd: Verlede.
Opsomming: ‘n Onbekende geluid maak ‘n elfjarige seun in die nag wakker. Hy weet nie of hy gedroom het nie, maar iets dwing hom om in die gang af te stap. Hy is bang, maar weet nie waarvoor nie. Hy hoor ‘n geluid uit sy pa se studeerkamer en stoot die deur oop. Sy pa sit daar met ‘n pistool in die hand, sy een vinger op die sneller. Sy pa lyk vir hom soos ‘n monster. Toe hy sy pa roep, druk sy pa die pistool in ‘n laai. Hy vra die seun om dit wat hy gesien het, geheim te hou. Hy hoor nie sy naam toe sy pa vir hom nag sê nie (die naam “los op in die donker”). Jare later sou hy vir homself ‘n ander naam kies. ‘n Naam “wat sê hoe dit voel om magteloos te wees vir antwoorde en net eggo’s uit die onderwêreld in ruil te kry”. Sy magteloosheid teenoor die vrees vir die dood word verwoord in die keuse van sy rekenaarnaam, Ekk-0. (An unknown sound wakes up an eleven-year-old boy in the night. He doesn’t know if he was dreaming, but something compels him to walk down the hall. He’s scared, but doesn’t know why. He heard a sound from his father’s study and pushed open the door. His father sits there with a pistol in hand, one finger on the trigger. His father looks like a monster to him. When he called his father, his father shoved the pistol into a drawer. He asks the boy to keep what he saw a secret. He does not hear his name when his father says night to him (the name “dissolves in the dark”). Years later he would choose a different name for himself. A name “that says what it feels like to be powerless for answers and only get echoes from the underworld in return”. His powerlessness against the fear of death is expressed in the choice of his computer name, Ekk-0.)

Tyd: Hede
Opsomming: Greg word wakker van die gelui van sy selfoon. Dis Nicole, sy meisie, wat haar droom vir hom vertel. Sy wil ook Greg se woord hê dat hy haar nie sal los ná wat in Jeffreysbaai gebeur het nie. Greg dink sy verneuk hom met ander ouens en vermy dit om vir haar te sê hy is lief vir haar. Hy is laat vir skool, ook vir sy diensbeurt by die Graad 8’s. Greg kry Eckardt nêrens nie, maar hoor sy selfoon in sy kas lui. (Title: Dormant gray cells, Polyfilla and ringtones.

Summary: Greg wakes up to the ringing of his cell phone. It’s Nicole, his girlfriend, who tells him her dream. She also wants Greg’s word that he won’t leave her after what happened in Jeffreys Bay. Greg thinks she’s cheating on him with other guys and avoids telling her he loves her. He is late for school, also for his shift at the Grade 8s. Greg can’t find Eckardt anywhere, but hears his cell phone ringing in his closet.)

Titel: Log file: Die dag voor die laaste skooljaar.

4. Tyd: Verlede. Terugflits: maande voor die vorige hoofstuk.
5. Opsomming: Greg se ma vat hom in Januarie ná die vakansie vir die nuwe skooljaar terug na Lawson Kollege. Ons leer ‘n paar dinge oor die skool ken. Kyk na die volgende video wat ‘n opsomming is van alles wat ons nou al oor die belangrikste milieu weet. Dit is Greg se laaste skooljaar en hy is ook die hoofseun. Kwanele Twala is die onderhoofseun en hy herinner Greg aan die VRL-vergadering daardie aand. Greg is ontsteld dat Kwanele dit gereël het terwyl dit eintlik die hoofseun se plig is. Ons maak kennis met Mark Gibbons, hy is beter bekend as Plank. Hy is die voorryspeler (forward) in rugby, en hy is slim. Greg se pa was die vorige aand ontevrede omdat Greg nie ‘n spesifieke plan vir sy finale skooljaar het nie. Greg is geïrriteerd met sy ma wat wil help om sy tasse te dra, maar besef sy “is eintlik baie nice”. Hy kry haar jammer dat sy elke dag alleen in hulle groot huis in Johannesburg is. Greg se ma pak sy tasse vir hom uit terwyl Greg die boonste verdieping van die koshuis leer ken. Dit is waar die Matrieks bly. Hy sien ‘n gesig wat hy nie ken nie en “ruik” sommer dis ‘n nuwe leerder. Sy naam is Eckardt en Greg sien hom dadelik as ‘n ou met ‘n houding wat uitgesorteer moet word. 5. Summary: Greg’s mother takes him back to Lawson College in January after the holidays for the new school year. We get to know a few things about the school. Check out the following video which summarizes everything we know about the most important milieu. It’s Greg’s last year at school and he’s also the head boy. Kwanele Twala is the vice-head boy and he reminds Greg about the VRL meeting that night. Greg is upset that Kwanele arranged this when it is actually the head boy’s duty. We are introduced to Mark Gibbons, he is better known as Plank. He is the forward in rugby, and he is smart. Greg’s father was displeased the night before because Greg did not have a specific plan for his final school year. Greg is annoyed with his mother who wants to help carry his bags, but realizes she “is actually very nice”. He feels sorry for her that she is alone in their big house in Johannesburg every day. Greg’s mother unpacks his bags for him while Greg gets to know the top floor of the dorm. This is where the Matrics reside. He sees a face he doesn’t know and “smells” it’s a new learner. His name is Eckardt and Greg immediately sees him as a guy with an attitude that needs to be sorted out.)

Titel: Boeke en Boggom

Ruimte: Lawson Kollege; Eckardt se koshuiskamer, die koshuis “Huis Da Vinci” en die wiskundeklas
Tyd: Teenwoordigetyd of hede
Opsomming: Greg was in Eckardt se kamer en sien dat sy selfoon en skootrekenaar nog daar is, maar sy drafskoene is nie in sy kas nie. Deur die loop van die dag is Greg nogsteeds opsoek na hom. Meneer Eden let op dat Eckardt nie in die klas is nie. Plank beweer dat sy ouers hom deur die loop van die nag kom haal het, en dat hulle later die skool sal kontak. Meneer Eden sê niks verder oor die saak nie en na die klas verby is, sê hy aan Greg dat meneer Andersen bewus is van die saak. Die leerders gaan na die volgende klas en die vraag bly by Greg: waar is Eckardt? (Title: Books and Boggum

Summary: Greg was in Eckardt’s room and noticed that his cell phone and laptop were still there, but his running shoes were not in his closet. Throughout the day, Greg is still looking for him. Mr. Eden notices that Eckardt is not in class. Plank claims that his parents came to pick him up during the night, and that they will contact the school later. Mr. Eden says nothing more about the matter and after the class is over, he tells Greg that Mr. Andersen is aware of the matter. The learners go to the next class and the question remains with Greg: where is Eckardt?)

Titel: Die Tonnel

Ruimte: Lawson Kollege, die klaskamer, die koshuis “Huis Da Vinci”, die atletiekveld en natuurlik die tonnel
Tyd: Verlede tyd
Opsomming: Plank maak vir Greg wakker en kogggel hom uit omdat hy hoofseun is, maar hy slaap nog. Plank sê ook dat al die VRL leerders net saketransaksies, vir die skool was; met ander woorde hulle ouers het geld aan die skool gegee. Die oggend hou hulle ‘n saalbyeenkoms waar mnr. Pienaar aankondig dat dit sy laaste jaar by Lawson Kollege is. Hy gaan verder fokus op private sakebelange. Meneer Andersen gaan by hom oorvat. Daar is ook twee nuwe onderwysers wat dadelik deur die loop van die dag byname gekry het. Greg en ander leerders het hard op die atletiekbaan geoefen. Later die aand word die “trappers” wakker gemaak en hulle word na die tonnel geneem, die leerders word dan geblinddoek en hulle moet hulle pad terug vind deur die tonnel. Greg sien dat Eckardt ook daar is en besef dat hy ook nog ‘n “trapper” is. Die seuns blinddoek hom met ‘n gestoei en laat sak hom by die mangat af. Net toe gly die blinddoek af en Greg sien die kyk in sy oë. Dit laat om aan sy oorlede broer, John, dink. Dadelik help Greg hom uit die mangat en die ander seuns wonder hoekom hy hom daaruit haal. Summary: Plank wakes Greg up and teases him about being head boy, but he’s still asleep. Plank also says that all the VRL learners were just business transactions, for the school; in other words their parents gave money to the school. In the morning they hold a hall meeting where mr. Pienaar announces that this is his last year at Lawson College. He will continue to focus on private business interests. Mr. Andersen is going to take over from him. There are also two new teachers who immediately got nicknames during the course of the day. Greg and other learners trained hard on the athletics track. Later in the evening the “trappers” are woken up and they are taken to the tunnel, the learners are then blindfolded and they have to find their way back through the tunnel. Greg sees that Eckardt is also there and realizes that he is also another “trapper”. The boys blindfold him with a grapple and lower him down the manhole. Just then the blindfold slid off and Greg saw the look in his eyes. It brings to mind his late brother, John. Immediately Greg helps him out of the manhole and the other boys wonder why he is taking him out.)
