who were the edelweiss pirates
how many were there by 1939
- group of youths in rhineland
- mainly form working class backgorunds and showed resistance by attacking the hitler youth
by 1939 there were 2,000 edelweiss pirates
what 3 things did the edelweiss pirates do
- group wrote anti-nazi slogans in graffiti
- wore american style clothing
- their symbol was the edelweiss, an alphine flower
what 3 things did the ‘swing youth’ do
- embraced the degenerate culture of the weimar republic and rejected nazi values
- influenced by america, swing youth played jazz, drank alcohol, and smoked
- they organised illegal dances that thousand of young people attended
who were the swing youth
members came from wealthy backgrounds, as their families would have record players

- edelweiss pirates distributed Allied propaganda, protected army deserters and openly attacked hitler youth
- nazis responded - in 1942 700 members were arrested
in 1944 12 were publicly hanged to send a message

why was opposition to the nazis not successful
how did people loosely resist
- people were scared of repression (control by force) and the opposition that did exist was divided and did not communicate with each other
- any political oppposition discovered was arrested and intimidated
people passively resisted by: telling anti-nazi joke or listening to anti-nazi regime music
who were the white rose
new opposition which emerged in the war
formed by 2 munich university student, the white rose was a symbol of justice
what did the white rose do
published anti-nazi leaflets and graffiti exposing the atrocities the nazis were committing
in 1943, the two students were both executed by the gestapo after a public protest against the nazis
the july plot, 1944
what was the most serious threat to hitler
- known as operation valkyrie, when count strauffenberg of the army tried to kill hitler with a bomb in his briefcase at a military conference
- bomb went off but hitler was only injured
- strauffenberg and 5,746 were executed - shows people within the army opposed nazi regime by the end of war

why were the nazis popular
they made germany stable and prosperous when democracy could not
the nazis tore down the treaty of versailles (which was hated) and gave germany international power
opposition from the church
