- open and public defiance of the annulment first from within the observant farnciscans.
- warden at richmond on Easter sunday denounced divorce plans before the king
- after AoT 1534 all houses shut down and monks dispersed. 30 monks arrested and died in prison

carthusian monks
A
- in 1532-3 refused to acceot the annulment. in 1534, resisted the govt pressure to agree to declerations against the authority of the pope.
- april 1535, 3 monks arrestd for denying supremact. Executed and became martyrs. over 3 years, 18 were arrested, executed or dtarved to death in prison
- opposition not united, some did not want to die. Priors conformed but otehrs grumbled.

- churchwardens accounts show that most traditional habits of the 1520s continued well into henrys reign.
- 80% of churchs in three areas in lincold did not bring in the english bibles 6 months after the 1538 injunctions. Church officials did nothing to enforce it.
- but by 1545 most churches had them because of proclamations in 1541 of a £2 fine
