what is the nerve supply for the instrinsic muscles of the tounge
hypoglossal nerve
origin & insertion of superior longitudinal muscles
runs backwards from tip just below dorsal surface
origin & insertion of inferior longitudinal muscles
runs backwards from tip closer to lower surface of the tongue
origin & insertion of vertical muscles
runs from dorsal surface to ventral surface
origin & insertion of transverse muscles
from the median septum, inserts into the (sides) of the tongue.
Action of superior longitudinal
turns the tip up
Action of inferior longitudinal
turns the tip down
Contraction of both superior & inferior longitudinal
shortens the tounge
Action of vertical muscle
flattens and brodens the toungue
Action of transverse muscle
narrows and lengthens the tounge
