Oral Cavity Flashcards
(26 cards)
What is the anterior opening of the oral cavity?
oral fissure -> opens into oral vestibule
What are the posterior/lateral walls of the oral cavity?
palatoglossal arches
What causes the pink color of lips?
branches from sup and inf labial aa that extend to the surface in CT papillae
What bones make the hard palate?
maxilla and palatine
Sublingual region features
lingual frenulum, opening of submandibular duct, sublingual fold, sublingual gland
Where is the sublingual gland found?
inferior to sublingual fold and sup to mylohyoid m (foundation for oral cavity)
What is significant of lingual frenulum?
where embryological structures joined
Submandibular duct features
runs along medial aspect of sublingual gland, ends ant and lat to frenulum of tongue, crossed TWICE by lingual n
Where does the submandibular duct open?
sublingual caruncle as single opening
Where does lingual n run in the oral cavity?
under sup constrictor and medial to lingual raphe, curls under duct and projects to tongue
Where does the deep lobe of the submandibular gland lie?
intraorally, duct comes from deep lobe
Where is the submandibular ganglion?
level of 3rd molar suspended from lingual n by 2 or more short n brs
What travels in the submandibular ganglion?
p-symp fibers from chorda tympani synapse and supply to submandibular and sublingual glands
symp fibers from EC plexus
What is the function of extrinsic mm of tongue?
move tongue in various directions, ant, post, lat
What is the function of intrinsic mm of tongue?
alter shape
What separates the ant 2/3 of tongue from post 1/3?
sulcus terminalis
What is the foramen cecum?
small pit that is non-functional sup remnant of proximal part of embryonic thryoglossal duct that developed the thyroid gland
Where does styloglossus m originate and insert?
styloid process to tongue
Where does hyoglossus O and I?
hyoid bone to tongue
Where is genioglossus O and I?
genoid tubercle of mandible to tongue
What is the bulk to the mm of tongue?
genioglossus m, post 1/3 = immobile portion
What happens in unilateral paralysis of CN XII? Bilateral paralysis?
- deviation of tongue toward paralyzed side, genioglossus m affected
- inability to protrude tongue, falls back and may occlude airway
- CN XII test
which a supplies most of the superficial structures of the oral cavity?
facial a
Where do the branches of lingual a run?
lingual a runs medial to hyoglossus m giving dorsal lingual a post to mm and other two brs ant to mm
