Organelle Functions (topic 1 Cells And Microscopy) Flashcards
(11 cards)
Nucleus function
Controls all activities of the cell and is surrounded by the nuclear membrane. Contains genes on chromosomes
Cytoplasm function
A liquid gel in which organelles are suspended and where most chemical reactions take place
Cell membrane function
Controls a passage of substances such as glucose and mineral ions into the cell as well as urea or hormones out
Mitochondria function
Structure in the cytoplasm where aerobic respiration takes place, releasing energy for the cell
Ribosomes function
Where protein synthesis takes place
Cell wall function
Made from cellulose, gives strength and support
Chloroplast function
Found in all green parts of a plant. Contain the pigment chlorophyll to absorb light for photosynthesis
Permanent vacuole function
Space in cytoplasm filled with cell sap, keeps cells rigid
Plasmids function
A plasmid is a small, circular, double-stranded DNA molecule, Plasmids carry genes for replicating their DNA, transferring themselves from one host cell to another
Flagellum function
Help an organism in movement
Pilli function
The pilus is a hair-like structure it initiates contact between mating pairs
