Organic Chem Flashcards
(12 cards)
What are stereoisomers
Molecules with the same structural formula but bonded together in different orders
Cahn-Ingold-Prelog priority Rules
Nucleophile
A species that has a lone pair of electrons with which it can form a bond by donating its electrons to an electron deficient carbon atom
What apparatus ensures a reaction is finished
A reflux apparatus, including a round bottom flask, condenser, and heating mantle, is commonly used to ensure a reaction is complete by allowing a reaction to proceed at a specific temperature for an extended period, while preventing loss of reactants or products. Additionally, monitoring the reaction using tools like thermometers or observing changes in the reaction mixture (e.g., color change, bubbling) can indicate when the reaction is finished.
What’s chromatography
It’s an analytical technique that separates components in a mixture between a mobile phase or stationary phase
Types of chromatography
Column chromatography
Thin layer chromatography - plate is coated with polar alumina/silica solid and a non polar solvent moves up the plate
Gas chromatography
Tlc interpretation to make invisible dots visible
Spray with ninhydrin or shine under UV light and draw around them
How does chromatography work?
Higher affinity for stationary phase - more attraction to the solid phase that is polar
Higher affinity for the mobile phase - more attraction to the non polar liquid, so will move faster.
Products of catalytic converters
Co2 N2 and H2O
SO2 can be removed from emissions by
Flue gas desulphurisation, using calcium oxide
CaO + SO2 -> CaSO3
Global warming model answers
CO double bonds in co2 absorb IR radiation. IR radiation emitted by the earth and the radiation does not escape
What’s a free radical
Any chemical with an unpaired electron
