Organic Chemistry Flashcards
(11 cards)
What is a hydrocarbon?
A hydrocarbon is a compound that contains carbon and hydrogen only.
What is an aliphatic compound?
An aliphatic compound consists of open chains of carbon atoms and closed chain compounds (rings) that resemble them in chemical properties.
What is an aromatic compound?
Aromatic compounds contain a benzene ring (CHg) in their molecules.
What is a homologous series?
A homologous series is defined as:
• a series of compounds of similar chemical properties
• showing graduations in physical properties
• having a general formula for its members
• each member has a similar method of preparation
• each member differs from the previous member by a (CH,) unit.
What is a saturated compound?
A saturated compound is one in which there are only single bonds between the atoms in the molecule.
What is an unsaturated compound?
An unsaturated compound is one that contains one or more double or triple bonds between atoms in the molecule.
What is an isomer?
Structural isomers are compounds with the same molecular formula but different structural formula.
What is a chloroalkane?
A chloroalkane is a compound where one or more of the H atoms in the alkane is replaced by a Cl atom.
What is a primary alcohol?
A primary alcohol is where the carbon atom bonded to the OH group is bonded to only 1 other carbon.
What is a secondary alcohol?
A secondary alcohol is where the carbon atom bonded to the OH group is bonded to 2 other carbons.
What is a tertiary alcohol?
A tertiary alcohol is where the carbon atom bonded to the OH group is bonded to 3 other carbons.
