Organic Chemistry Flashcards
(12 cards)
What is a functional group?
A specific group of atoms within a molecule that is responsible for a characteristic chemical reaction of that molecule.
Name the functional group: -OH
Hydroxyl group (Alcohol)
What is the general formula of an alkane?
CₙH₂ₙ₊₂
What type of bonds are present in alkenes?
At least one carbon-carbon double bond (C=C)
What is a hydrocarbon?
a compound that contains carbon and hydrogen only
What are alkenes?
saturated hydrocarbons. Molecules of these compounds contain only single bonds between the carbon atoms in the chain
What is saturated?
molecules with only single bonds
What is unsaturated?
compounds composed of carbon and hydrogen atoms, with one or more carbon-carbon double or triple bonds in their chemical structure
What are the homologous series?
a family of organic compounds that have the same general formula, have similar chemical properties and show a gradual increase in physical properties such as melting and boiling points
What is the general chemical test for unsaturation?
a bromine water test: it is shaken with an unsaturated hydrocarbon and loses its color (addition reaction)
What is the general formula for alcohols?
CₙH₂ₙ₊₁OH
What type of bonds are present in alkanes?
Only single carbon/hydrogen bonds
