Organisation Flashcards
(27 cards)
What’s a tissue
A group of cells with a similar function
What’s an organ
A group of tissues carrying out a specific function
Organ system
Organs working together
What test is used to indicate sugar?
Benedict’s solution, from blue/green to yellow/red
What test is used to indicate starch?
Iodine, shows blue/black
What test is used to indicate protein?
Biuret,from blue to pink/purple
What test is used to indicate lipids?
Sudan 111, will turn bright red
What is an independent variable?
The variable being altered
What is a dependent variable?
The variable being tested
What is an enzyme?
A biological catalyst that speeds up reactions without being used
What is an active site?
The specific region of an enzyme where the substrate binds and the chemical reaction occurs
What does amylase react with to create sugars/glucose
Starch
What do protease react with to create amino acids
Protein
What do lipase react with to create glycerol and fatty acids
Lipid
Where is bile produced
In the liver and stored in the gall bladder
What is the heart?
A large muscular organ which pumps blood carrying oxygen
What are the lungs?
They are site of gas exchange where oxygen is exchanged for carbon dioxide in the blood
What is the equation for respiration
Glucose + oxygen -> carbon dioxide + water + (energy)
What are capillaries?
They are narrow vessels which are only one cell thick and provide a short diffusion pathway to increase the rate of substances being transferred.
What direction does the blood from the arteries go?
Away from the heart
What direction does the blood flow from the vein?
Towards the heart
Is the arteries blood oxygenated
Yes
Is the veins blood oxygenated
No
Do the arteries have high blood pressure?
Yes
